2) More Data Sci seats
More Data Sci seats
NOTE: The following courses do not fulfill requirements for the Legal Studies major.
We're excited to make more seats available for students in the social sciences and humanities in two data science classes. The classes have no prerequisites, assume no previous experience with computing, and are taught by faculty in the humanities and social sciences.

Data and Justice (Data C4AC). This is a small, accessible entry-level course on data science, visualization, and storytelling through the lens of racial justice. It includes lectures, readings, discussions, and hands-on work with data on health, incarceration, bias, and justice. It's a great first course for students who want to try out data science. Data 4AC satisfies the American Cultures requirement and the Historical Studies or Social & Behavioral Studies breadth requirement.

Human Contexts and Ethics of Data (Data C104). This is our flagship offering in Data Science on the social impacts of data technologies and AI. Data C104 can count toward the STS minor, the Historical Studies or Philosophy & Values breadth requirement, and the Human Contexts & Ethics requirement for the Data Science major or minor.

There are still seats reserved for Social Science majors and minors in these classes, including Legal Studies. If you have any questions, please contact us at ds-advising@berkeley.edu.

Join Climate Change in Media! (Course #34155)

Tuesdays from 3:30 - 5:00 pm,  1 unit

This course focuses on how climate change is framed to the public. As the threat of climate change increases daily, we must analyze how climate change is framed, because the media can convince people of almost anything. This class is going to analyze how climate change is portrayed through various forms of media, including writing, documentaries, news outlets, and our daily surroundings. We will particularly be focusing on the concept of environmental justice when examining all these sources. In order to properly address climate change, we must build a framework that not only protects our planet but also ensures that the burdens and benefits of a sustainable future are shared equitably among all communities, leaving no one behind. The course is open to students from all disciplines, backgrounds, and lived experiences to contribute to a diverse, engaging, and enriching classroom environment.

4) Rsrch Re: GenAI
Rsrch Re: GenAI
The Center for Teaching & Learning (CTL) at UC Berkeley is seeking participants for a research study that we are conducting on how our students and instructors think about learning skills at the college-level given the rise of Generative AI (GenAI).

We invite current Berkeley undergraduate students and instructors to complete a brief survey to share their beliefs, perceptions, and feelings towards GenAI: qrco.de/ctl-genai. Those who complete this survey will be entered into a drawing for one of ten $50 gift cards (estimated 1 in 50 chance of being selected) from their choice of three possible vendors: Cal Student Store, Berkeley Bowl Marketplace, or Pegasus Books Store.

This initial survey will take no more than 10 minutes. In this survey, you will also be asked if you would like to participate in more activities for this specific research study such as a focus group or follow-up survey, which both offer additional gift card compensation.

There are very minimal risks to research participants. Participation in all parts of this study will be kept as confidential as possible. Any data from this study will be de-identified and/or reported in aggregate.

7) Go to Class
Go to Class
You should always go to class, but especially attend during the first two weeks of class and get on all the attendance records.
Be sure to go to section (for classes that have section) beginning second week, and get on the attendance record.
Many of our classes are full.
And the waitlists are full.
If you don't go to class and section and get on the attendance records, someone else who has attended all the sessions will have priority over you.
If you absolutely have to be absent, you need to write to your instructors to let them know or they will assume you aren't interested in staying enrolled.
