Dear Berkeley Law Community,
It is with a very heavy heart that we are writing to share the sad news that our wonderful colleague, Laurie Edelman, passed away tonight. Laurie had been seriously ill since late December, but had been doing better until recently.
Laurie joined the Berkeley Law faculty in 1996 and was the Agnes Roddy Robb Professor of Law and Professor of Sociology. She received her J.D. from Berkeley and a Ph.D. from Stanford. She taught at the University of Wisconsin, Madison before joining the Berkeley faculty. She was a beloved teacher and mentor, as well as an award-winning scholar. She received many honors, including being elected as a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. She served as secretary and as president of the Law and Society Association. She held many important positions at Berkeley Law, including serving as Director of the Center for the Study of Law and Society from 2004-2009 and as Chair and Associate Dean for Jurisprudence and Social Policy from 2010-2013.
Laurie was an integral and extraordinary member of the Law School faculty for so many years. She will be deeply missed.
Those who knew Laurie are warmly welcomed to contribute to a memorial website here. You can read additional tributes, and contribute your own, at the Law & Society Association website here.
