3)  Nom your Fav GSI

Nom your Fav GSI
Here's your chance to nominate your favorite GSI for the Outstanding GSI Award that's given out at the Legal Studies/JSP Commencement ceremony.

Nominees must have been GSIs during Sp23, Su23, or Fa23.  The criteria for evaluation include capacity to motivate students; command of subject matter; skill in organizing, clarifying, and developing course material; and helpfulness to the instructor. Length of service also counts, so someone who has only served once as a GSI would not ordinarily be nominated.

GSIs are only able to win the Outstanding GSI award one time during their graduate careers.

Legal Studies can only make a limited number of nominations, so please nominate only GSIs who have really been outstanding. Final screening will be by the Chair, Director, and Advisor for Legal Studies. Outstanding GSIs will be recognized at the Legal Studies graduation ceremony in addition to gaining campus recognition.

Last Spring's awardees from Legal Studies(link is external) were Griffin Brunk, Cheri Kruse, Isabella Mariani, and Cristina Violante. The previous year’s awardees were Doug Sangster, Yael Plitmann, Nandina Babic, and Ilya Akdemir

These students have already won, so aren't eligible.

Please reply to this e-mail with the GSI’s name and a paragraph supporting your nomination by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb 16.

5)  Summer Sessions
Summer Sessions
Enrollments for Su24 began last Thursday for Berkeley students.
A few of you have had trouble enrolling. Please check with Summer Sessions for help.
If you are completing your major requirements this summer, you can walk in the spring ceremonies, but you must be on the summer degree list, not the Sp24 degree list.
And when I say 'degree list' I mean EGT, your Expected Graduation Term.
Here's the form for changing your EGT to summer.
Many of you tried to enroll in Core classes this semester Sp24 and didn't get in.
Summer is a great time to find plenty of seats in a good number of Core classes.
103, 107, 138, 160, 177, and 182 are all being offered.
138 is online.
We're also offering 157 online.
My best advice is to take just one course per summer session.
Our courses have MTWTh Lecture and a Discussion section.
That's five classes in four days and the session is over in six weeks.
So if you were to enroll in two classes, let's say in Session A, you would have ten classes in four days and it's all crammed into six weeks. It's a lot. It's intense and it's too much.
We see gpas going up during the summer and that's because students are focused on just one class.
