2) Legal Studies Commencement
Nominees must have been GSIs during Sp23, Su23, or Fa23. The criteria for evaluation include capacity to motivate students; command of subject matter; skill in organizing, clarifying, and developing course material; and helpfulness to the instructor. Length of service also counts, so someone who has only served once as a GSI would not ordinarily be nominated.
GSIs are only able to win the Outstanding GSI award one time during their graduate careers.
Legal Studies can only make a limited number of nominations, so please nominate only GSIs who have really been outstanding. Final screening will be by the Chair, Director, and Advisor for Legal Studies. Outstanding GSIs will be recognized at the Legal Studies graduation ceremony in addition to gaining campus recognition.
Last Spring's awardees from Legal Studies were Griffin Brunk, Cheri Kruse, Isabella Mariani, and Cristina Violante. The previous year’s awardees were Doug Sangster, Yael Plitmann, Nandina Babic, and Ilya Akdemir
These students have already won, so aren't eligible.
Please reply to this e-mail with the GSI’s name and a paragraph supporting your nomination by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb 16.

Each year, the Institute of Governmental Studies awards up to four Charles H. Percy research grants in the amount of $500 each to U.C. Berkeley undergraduate students who are conducting research on an aspect of American politics, including public opinion, electoral behavior, civic participation, government institutions, social movements, and public policy. Students from a broad range of disciplines are encouraged to apply.
The Percy Grants are made possible by a generous donation from the late William Brandt and his wife, Patrice Bugelas-Brandt. The fellowship was created to honor Congressman Mike Synar of Oklahoma, who was Bill’s mentor when he first became active in politics and public policy, and Senator Charles H. Percy of Illinois for whom Patrice worked as a press secretary.

Cal Students,
Join a community of students seeking to make an impact on poverty and inequality!
The Global Poverty and Practice Minor introduces students to the frameworks, methods, and practical skills necessary to engage with global poverty and inequality in effective ways.
The minor requires five courses that help students prepare for and reflect on a "Practice Experience." This experience is a central component of the minor in which students intern or volunteer with domestic or international NGOs, government agencies, social enterprises, or other poverty or development programs. Students work on issues such as environmental justice, community health, affordable housing, education, labor rights, and economic development.
Funding is available to support students’ practice experiences.
The deadline to declare the minor this semester is March 12th. There are no prerequisites required to declare.
The Declaration Form and additional information about the minor can be found at: http://blumcenter.berkeley.edu/gppminor.
