1) Nom your Fav GSI
Nom your Fav GSI
Here's your chance to nominate your favorite GSI for the Outstanding GSI Award that's given out at the Legal Studies/JSP Commencement ceremony.

Nominees must have been GSIs during Sp23, Su23, or Fa23.  The criteria for evaluation include capacity to motivate students; command of subject matter; skill in organizing, clarifying, and developing course material; and helpfulness to the instructor. Length of service also counts, so someone who has only served once as a GSI would not ordinarily be nominated.

GSIs are only able to win the Outstanding GSI award one time during their graduate careers.

Legal Studies can only make a limited number of nominations, so please nominate only GSIs who have really been outstanding. Final screening will be by the Chair, Director, and Advisor for Legal Studies. Outstanding GSIs will be recognized at the Legal Studies graduation ceremony in addition to gaining campus recognition.

Last Spring's awardees from Legal Studies were Griffin Brunk, Cheri Kruse, Isabella Mariani, and Cristina Violante. The previous year’s awardees were Doug Sangster, Yael Plitmann, Nandina Babic, and Ilya Akdemir

These students have already won, so aren't eligible.

Please reply to this e-mail with the GSI’s name and a paragraph supporting your nomination by 5 p.m. Friday, Feb 16.

3) Congratulations Anna!
Congratulations Anna Diaz for winning the 2024 Charles H. Percy Undergraduate Grant for Public Affairs Research!
Anna's work is entitled: "Incarceration and Identity: A Reflection of the Criminal Justice System"

Each year, the Institute of Governmental Studies awards up to four Charles H. Percy research grants in the amount of $500 each to U.C. Berkeley undergraduate students who are conducting research on an aspect of American politics, including public opinion, electoral behavior, civic participation, government institutions, social movements, and public policy. Students from a broad range of disciplines are encouraged to apply.

The Percy Grants are made possible by a generous donation from the late William Brandt and his wife, Patrice Bugelas-Brandt. The fellowship was created to honor Congressman Mike Synar of Oklahoma, who was Bill’s mentor when he first became active in politics and public policy, and Senator Charles H. Percy of Illinois for whom Patrice worked as a press secretary.

HRC opens application to Student Fellowship program
Our summer student fellowship is officially open for applications! Over the last 30 years, the Human Rights Center has sent more than 400 fellows to over 81 countries and territories to provide crucial skills and support to frontline organizations across the globe, as students gain invaluable experience on the ground. Last year’s fellows worked on projects including reproductive rights for Rohingya refugees in Bangladeshi camps; the right to drinking water in California’s drying Central Valley; and human trafficking in the Mediterranean, among many others. The fellowship is open to all UC Berkeley students enrolled in the spring 2024 semester. All students (both graduate and undergraduate) interested in human rights, civil rights, indigenous rights, and environmental justice are encouraged to apply. Our fellows hail from Berkeley Law, Berkeley Journalism, the Goldman School of Public Policy, the School of Public Health, and beyond.

Cal Students,

Join a community of students seeking to make an impact on poverty and inequality!

The Global Poverty and Practice Minor introduces students to the frameworks, methods, and practical skills necessary to engage with global poverty and inequality in effective ways.

The minor requires five courses that help students prepare for and reflect on a "Practice Experience."  This experience is a central component of the minor in which students intern or volunteer with domestic or international NGOs, government agencies, social enterprises, or other poverty or development programs.  Students work on issues such as environmental justice, community health, affordable housing, education, labor rights, and economic development.

Funding is available to support students’ practice experiences.

The deadline to declare the minor this semester is March 12th. There are no prerequisites required to declare.

The Declaration Form and additional information about the minor can be found at: http://blumcenter.berkeley.edu/gppminor.

7) Splash
Splash
Splash at Berkeley is an educational outreach event each semester where high school students come to campus for a day of classes taught by undergraduates, graduates, and postdocs. These classes are between 1 and 3 hours (in hour multiples) and can be taught on literally any (appropriate) topic of your interest. Topics in the past have ranged from black holes to crocheting to poker. Anything you want to teach, you can! Our goal is to get high school students interested in the wide range of topics they can explore during college. Additionally, this is a fantastic way to give back to the local Bay community.
This spring, Splash will be on Sunday, April 21, and we would love for you to teach with us! Teacher registration is open until February 26th, so please sign up using the link below.
More info can be found at this link. If you have any questions about the program or teaching, please email me at sajant@berkeley.edu. Also, please encourage your friends to teach as well! We had ~300 students in the Fall and are working to have even more this semester, which will only be possible with the help of enthusiastic teachers like you.

Add/Drop Deadline 2/7
The Add/Drop DEADLINE is Wednesday February 7th.
After February 7th, you will need to use a Late Change to Class Schedule.
Every student receives two Late Changes total for your entire career.
Use them wisely, but try not to use them at all, especially for things that you can take care of before the deadline.
Check your schedule to be sure it's correct.
Check your schedule to be sure it's correct now, before the deadline, in case you need help with something.
