Fall 2022 UCDC Extended Deadline!

Are you interested in spending a semester in Washington DC taking classes and interning for UCB academic credit? UC Berkeley is increasing the number of Cal students in UCDC next semester, and we have reopened the application for fall!

The UCDC program sends juniors and seniors to live at the UC Washington Center, located in the heart of DC, while taking exciting classes and participating in a wide variety of prestigious internships. UCDC gives students the opportunity to gain valuable real-world work experience, build professional networks, and make lifelong friendships.

UCDC is open to all majors. Financial support is available for all participating students, including international students who go to DC in fall 2022. Grants range between $2,500-$5,000 depending on financial need.

The extended priority review deadline for Fall 2022 is Thursday, April 7. Applications received after that will be reviewed on a rolling basis depending on available spots.  More information and application available at ucdc.berkeley.edu.

Attend an upcoming information session or make an appointment with the program advisor.  The UCDC StudentAmbassadors (peer advisors) are also available to answer questions about the student experience and tell you about their time in UCDC.

The API NEXT State Capitol Internship, powered by APAPA, is a professional and leadership development program, designed for students interested in skills and experiences to help advance their leadership skills in government, industry and community affairs. This nine-week program, taking place during the Spring, is unique because it places interns into offices in the Capitol and other elected offices, while providing interns opportunities to put into practice skills valuable and transferable in multiple industry sectors.

We're excited to once again be working with Professor Saru Jayaraman on Freedom Summer 2022! Since 2020 the Mario Savio Social Justice Program at UC Berkeley's Public Service Center has partnered with Prof Jayaraman and One Fair Wage to connect students from universities across the country with nonpartisan voter engagement activities in key battleground states and students have found the experience impactful and transformative

Prof Jayaraman will be leading the program again this summer, is able to offer some students summer housing if they are open to relocating, and all participants will receive a certificate upon completion. Below is Prof Jayaraman's bio

BIO:

Saru Jayaraman is the President of One Fair Wage, Co-Founder of the Restaurant Opportunities Centers United (ROC United), and Director of the Food Labor Research Center at the University of California, Berkeley. 

Saru is a graduate of Yale Law School and the Harvard Kennedy School of Government. She was profiled in the New York Times “Public Lives” section in 2005, named one of Crain’s “40 Under 40” in 2008, was 2010 Wins’ “Newsmaker of the Year” and New York Magazine’s “Influentials” of New York City. She was listed in CNN’s “Top10 Visionary Women” and recognized as a Champion of Change by the White House in 2014, and a James Beard Foundation Leadership Award in 2015. 

Saru authored Behind the Kitchen Door (Cornell University Press, 2013), a national bestseller, and has appeared on CNN with Soledad O’Brien, Bill Moyers Journal on PBS, Melissa Harris Perry and UP with Chris Hayes on MSNBC, Real Time with Bill Maher on HBO, the Today Show, and NBC Nightly News with Brian Williams.  Her most recent book is Forked: A New Standard for American Dining (Oxford University Press, 2016). She attended the Golden Globes in January 2018 with Amy Poehler as part of the Times Up action to address sexual harassment. In 2019, she was named the San Francisco Chronicle Visionary of the Year.

7) Meta Legal Scholars

NOTE: This is a program for students who will be entering law school Fa23.

We are pleased to announce that Meta’s Legal Department and Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP are now accepting applications for the 2022 Meta Legal Scholars program.  As you know, Meta  Legal Scholars (formerly Facebook Legal Scholars) is a two-day workshop intended to provide incoming 1Ls from backgrounds which are historically underrepresented in the legal profession with insight into the legal profession and the tools necessary to succeed in law school.  A more detailed overview of the program, which is scheduled to take place virtually July 28  – July 29, 2022, is attached.

We are particularly seeking candidates with proven academic abilities and a demonstrated active commitment to the furtherance of diversity and inclusion.  Interested students should submit a copy of their resume, the completed application, and a personal statement of no more than 500 words to metalegalscholars@kilpatricktownsend.com  by June 15, 2022.  Applicants will be admitted on a rolling basis until the program is full. 

Meta Legal Scholars Program


PROGRAM OVERVIEW
The Meta Legal Scholars Program is a collaboration between Meta’s Legal Department and Kilpatrick Townsend & Stockton LLP as part of these entities’ efforts to promote diversity and inclusion within the legal profession. The Meta Legal Scholars Program is a two day intensive workshop designed to provide participants with insight into the legal profession and the tools necessary to succeed in law school. Among other things, participants will experience simulated law school classes and will receive feedback on graded homework assignments; will receive instruction on legal writing; will be guided on case-briefing, outlining and time management; and will hear from law school deans and current law students on how to successfully transition from the last year of college to the first year of law school. Scholars will also have the opportunity to network with and develop personally and professionally from in-house counsel in a Fortune 100 corporation and other prominent members of the Silicon Valley legal community. The 2022 Meta Legal Scholars Program will take place virtually July 28 –29.
Space is limited. Thus, interested students are encouraged to apply early.


QUALIFICATIONS
We are particularly seeking candidates with stellar academic credentials that have demonstrated an active commitment to the furtherance of diversity and inclusion. Preference will be given to individuals entering law school in Fall 2022 or Winter 2023.
