Roosevelt Institute

Hello everyone,

The Roosevelt Network at Berkeley is offering a free, no-experience-necessary workshop for Cal students on the foundations of writing and changing public policy Tuesday, March 9, with two time slots, 6 – 7 PM and 8 – 9 PM PST.

Knowing how to evaluate public policy is slowly becoming an essential career skill in many fields, and our first workshop, “Writing Public Policy – A Field Guide to Changing the World,” serves as a primer to the subject as a whole. Students of all disciplines and experience levels are free to register here.

RNB is an interdisciplinary, student-led policy think tank and a chapter of the nationwide Roosevelt Institute, that offers students of all majors an opportunity to engage with social issues through the lens of writing public policy. Check out our website to see more of what we do, or sign up to become a member to receive our weekly notices of opportunities and events.

Feel free to reach out to RooseveltNBerkeley@gmail.com with any questions or concerns.

Respectfully,
The Roosevelt Network at Berkeley Team

On Monday, March 8, from 7 PM – 8 PM, the Berkeley Legal Studies Association (BLSA) will be hosting a Public Interest Law Panel for students interested in pursuing a career in public service after law school! Our goal is to build more camaraderie among the pre-law community as well as provide career exposure opportunities to passionate students.

During the virtual Zoom event, we will have public interest legal professionals speak about their career paths, memorable cases, and how their work impacts the community and legal sector. The event will follow a general Q&A format.

We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

7) 1st Black Female Lawyer

1st Black Female Lawyer

To continue to celebrate 150 years of women students being accepted to the University of California, please read more about our honoree, Annie Coker, who was also featured on President Drake Reflection’s on Black History Month video. (Scroll down below Drake’s address for more on each honoree.) Further, please check our newest webpage Celebrating 150 years of Women that commemorates GenEq’s 150W Instagram campaign. These digital illustrations were created by artists and student interns, Caelesti Carranza (Class of 2021) and Jimin Oh (Class of 2023).
The GenEq 150W Celebration uplifts the history and contributions of women who serve as an inspiration for generations to come.

Celebrating Annie Coker, California’s first Black female lawyer! Coker, who received her undergraduate degree from Berkeley, was also Berkeley Law’s first Black female graduate. Having graduated in 1929 where she was one of two total women in her class, Coker was a trailblazer who went on to become the first Black female lawyer in California. Despite working during a time when then field was dominated by white men, her impact as a black woman in law has solidified her role as a legal icon.

Be inspired!

8) Cyber-Hate Symp.

Cyber-Hate Symp.

I wanted to share session two of our symposium on Cyber-Hate, entitled Combating Online Hate: Law, Technology, and Society, that may be of interest to Legal Studies majors. Cosponsored by the Helen Diller Institute for Jewish Law and Israel Studies through its Program on Jewish Law, Thought, and Identity and the Berkeley Center for Law and Technology, the symposium will explore the phenomenon of cyber-hate on Thursday, March 4 from 9-10:30am PST. This session looks at remedies and responses as well as the legal, social, and technological frameworks and constraints for responding to online hate. Yuval Shany, former Dean, Hebrew University School of Law; former Chair, United Nations Human Rights Committee, will keynote this session. Other panelists include Imran Ahmed (Center for Countering Digital Hate), Mary Anne Franks (University of Miami School of Law), and David Kaye (UC Irvine School of Law).

We would love for you to attend, and if possible, share this event with colleagues in your network. Additionally, for lawyers in California, 3 hours of Mandatory Continuing Legal Education (MCLE) credit are available (1.5 credits per session). Here is the link to the event page, and I’ve attached a flyer below. Please let me know if I can provide any more information.

9) New Minor

New Minor

Announcing a New Minor in Politics, Philosophy and Law

The new campus minor in Politics, Philosophy and Law aims to gather together a cohort of highly motivated students who are interested in the foundations of democratic governance and public affairs, and to provide them with a coherent yet interdisciplinary program of study in politics, moral and political philosophy, and legal studies, with intensive training in both analytical writing and in presentation of their work.  The Minor draws primarily upon existing courses in Legal Studies, Philosophy, Political Economy and Political Science, but will add its own courses over time.

PPL will be especially appealing to students interested in public service, including law, policy, and academia, who are eager to benefit from individualized mentoring in writing, analysis and presentation.  A second goal of the Minor is to provide an intellectual community, through extracurricular events, where students can discuss questions of justice and social policy.  We are eager for the participation of students from all life backgrounds, as well as all majors and colleges at Berkeley, provided they are willing to put in the intensive effort to develop these skills. All Colleges have approved PPL for their students.

Please see this website for more information on the requirements and application process.

PPL is directed by Professor Christopher Kutz of the Law School & Legal Studies program, and administered by Ms. Laura Spautz, with a multi-departmental board of faculty advisors.  Please direct questions to them.
