Our program is suited to meet the goals of individuals seeking leadership positions within their organizations in a range of fields such as corrections, law enforcement, social services, probation/parole, as well as a variety of public administrative roles. Our curriculum provides a strong foundation in theory coupled with broad practical applications, providing an interdisciplinary approach consistent with the mission of our School of Social Ecology. Students graduating from our program are positioned for career advancement as well as further academic endeavors.

Our MAS courses are taught by our department faculty (with few exceptions). This provides students the opportunity to engage with outstanding scholars sharing their cutting-edge research.
Our program includes an optional one week on-campus immersion course for incoming new students. In these five days you will have an opportunity to interact with many of the faculty teaching in the MAS program.

Do I need a specific academic background?
Students from all academic disciplines are welcome to apply. Criminology, Law and Society affects all aspects of life and we need a group of diverse thinkers to solve policy challenges from different lenses in the criminal justice field.

The Queer Cal Pals mentorship program, a mentorship initiative hosted by the UC Berkeley Gender Equity Resource Center occurs every Fall and is designed to support incoming LGBTQ+ undergraduates by pairing them with continuing student mentors to guide them through their first semester at UC Berkeley.
“Queer Cal Pals” is a mentorship program conducted through the Gender Equity Resource Center at UC Berkeley + designed to support incoming LGBTQ+ undergraduates, including first year, transfer, and re-entry students.
Mentors (which we refer to as "Buddies") for this program can be either graduate or undergraduate students who have completed at least one semester at UC Berkeley and are willing to commit to meeting twice a month for mentee (“Pal”) check-ins, in addition to a few mandatory events and trainings (specified on the application form). If you are a current student seeking to support those who are just coming in to our community, we encourage you to apply as a "Buddy".
If you are an incoming student who is interested in learning more about queer culture, resources, and experience at UC Berkeley, or someone who feels they could benefit from community support or mentorship, we encourage you to apply to be a mentee ("Pal") for the Fall 2026 semester.
